Frida Kahlo and Cultural Inclusivity: Comparing US and International Media Coverage of Mattel’s Inspiring Women Doll
摘要
Mattel’s Barbie brand has been increasingly expanding its cultural representation and inclusivity, and although this expansion has received positive reviews from many, the outcomes and implications for the cultures that these dolls represent are rarely explored. The purpose of this chapter is to critically analyze the ways in which the Barbie brand has been covered in English-language American media and Spanish-language international media. Using the 2018 Frida Kahlo doll as a case study, this chapter offers a qualitative content analysis of the media coverage of its release and subsequent controversies. For example, regarding the lawsuit to block the use of Kahlo’s likeness by members of the late artist’s family. Using this framing analysis, the authors argue that the brand is at once proclaiming to embody an empowering and inclusive message with the Inspiring Women doll series, supported by mainstream media coverage, while at the same time ignoring and appropriating the cultures it purports to uplift.
