Is Saturn the most beautiful of all the planets, to our eyes? Jupiter has wonderful swirling clouds, but those Saturnian rings and their shadows curling around the sphere take some beating. Then again, although detail is not visible until we look closely, wondrous life on Earth, millions of species including homo sapiens, us, must surely make our own home the most awesome. The dynamism of our home planet doesn’t involve life alone but everything that has made, and makes, life possible—interactions of water, air and rock, of atmosphere and light, ocean floors that push outwards to move whole continents, magnetism that provides protection from the solar wind, and more. And yet, from afar, it looks like just another tiny sphere in the terrifying vastness of wider existence.
