Building on the collective action framework, this chapter explores how patriotism influences political engagement, especially voter turnout. Drawing on both new survey data and historical survey datasets, the evidence suggests that patriotic sentiment is a powerful predictor of voting, even when controlling for multiple confounding variables. Although patriotism correlates with higher civic involvement, it does not necessarily predict partisan activism; rather, it fosters engagement that is seen as broadly beneficial to the nation. The chapter concludes that patriotism can serve as a significant catalyst for electoral participation in a democracy.
