Patriotism and Collective Action
摘要
This chapter tests the link between patriotism and collective action. Survey-based evidence shows that individuals reporting higher patriotism are more likely to engage in civic activities (e.g., volunteering). A survey experiment primes participants with patriotic sentiments and measures their likelihood of taking tangible action (e.g., signing up to donate blood). The findings indicate that patriotic attachment can indeed inspire greater willingness to pay personal costs that benefit society, supporting the central contractual theory of patriotism as a motivator for helping one’s country.
