There are many options when deciding on how to repair an inguinal hernia. Minimally invasive techniques are known for quick recovery time and improved postoperative pain. The two options of laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair—the transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) or the totally extraperitoneal (TEP) approach—are essentially the same repair once access to the preperitoneal space has been established. However, the authors feel that the TAPP approach has many benefits over the TEP. TAPP is an easy-to-learn valuable approach that is safe and very effective. This chapter will explain the benefits of this technique and how to become proficient at it. Patient selection as well as complications related to laparoscopic repairs are discussed.
