Management of Rectus Diastasis
摘要
Rectus diastasis is a common condition after pregnancy and is an important component of a postpartum abdominal deformity. The condition is associated with core instability, back pain, abdominal core muscle weakness, urinary incontinence, decreased quality of life, and aesthetic deformations. The recommended first line of treatment is abdominal core stability training. Surgical repair of the diastasis has proven to restore core stability and core function when core stabilizing training has been unsuccessful. The purpose of a surgical repair of a rectus diastasis is to reestablish the anatomy to be able to restore a normal abdominal core function. Several surgical techniques have shown positive results. We demonstrate a feasible surgical repair technique of a rectus diastasis, using a suture plication of the anterior rectus sheets. The surgical repair can preferably be performed by general surgeons with abdominal wall surgery experience, while a cooperation with plastic surgeons is advised when aesthetic considerations are valid. This chapter aims to provide a perspective on the topic Rectus Diastasis, as well as to share some useful clinical recommendations.
