Green Logistics, Supply Chain Management, and Technology-Induced Carbon Emissions in the UK

The purpose of this chapter is to investigate the potential impact of Balfour Beatty’s green logistics and supply chain management (SCM) practices on technology-induced carbon emissions. Organisations in the construction sector incorporate practices such as green design, green materials management, green transportation, green construction, and reverse logistics into their SCM operations to make them sustainable. Balfour Beatty, a construction giant, has incorporated a number of technologies, from eco-net and eco-sense to machine learning technology, 3D-based survey design models and GPS systems for reducing its emissions. However, its over-reliance on fossil fuels and the associated financial burden make the task quite challenging. This research, taking into consideration Balfour Beatty, contributes to identifying the potential green practices that a construction company can use to reduce emissions caused by its logistics and SCM activities. Additionally, the current research area is further contributes to understand the key technologies implemented by Balfour Beatty to automate its construction works and minimise emissions, energy consumption, and operating costs. The knowledge to be produced from the exploration can help set industry benchmarks for other construction firms to handle their SCM-related emissions.
