The objective of this chapter is to discuss the current role of social media in health care. We present digital strategies such as the “Renal Health” profile on Instagram, developed by our research group, and by the International Society of Nephrology, as successful examples of interaction between healthcare providers and users. The rapid spread of incorrect information, erosion of values, generic healthcare practices, and the use of social media by people interested only in financial return are some of the losses that have already been calculated. As a growing communication channel, social networks require special attention, given the speed and ambiguity of the content shared. It is increasingly necessary to develop reliable sources of information and provide appropriate professional guidance to these sources as well as better understand the consequences of using social media as empowerment tool.
