Since its establishment in 1974, Aalborg University has relied on a university-wide didactical approach, now officially named PBL (Problem-Based Learning). Teaching at Aalborg University is based on authentic real-life problems that are scientific and relevant beyond the university. The pedagogical tradition at Aalborg University draws inspiration from the German-Scandinavian educational tradition of critical thinking. The essential aspect of PBL is that students are introduced to a predefined academic framework at the beginning of the semester and apply their curiosity to develop (or define) their problem formulation. This problem formulation is unique as it relates to the academic framework and authentic problems, combining students’ curiosity with their learning interests. It also ensures that students work within their proximal zone of development. Given the uniqueness of the problem formulation, students must employ everyday (scientific) creativity to devise a distinctive problem solution.
