Innovations in High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission Systems: A Review of Emerging Technologies
摘要
The subject of this paper is the analysis of the main innovations in the field of High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission together with identification of the potential application of these innovations in contemporary power systems. There are general trends as to why HVDC technology is becoming the new norm as we shall see below:—Well-proven for transmission of electricity over long distances, connection of asynchronous systems as well as for integrating renewable energy sources into the current electricity grids. The review considers different HVDC technologies such as LCC, VSC, and MMC which provide essential benefits based on the particular application. There has been progress in the HVDC systems making them to have better experience and also cheaper in the recent past. As examples, VSC technology helps to strengthen the grid and ease renewable generation interconnection, and UHVDC systems provide continental size transmission links. As a result, HVDC can be said to be a technology that is going to be of tremendous importance to power transmission in the future. Future developments of such systems and continuous research and technologies make the whole systems even more effective and economically feasible.
