For the past decade, we have lived in a time where one crisis follows another—consider, for instance, the migration crisis primarily affecting Europe, the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic, or the tragic war in Ukraine. Following Donald Trump’s election victory and the Brexit referendum, there has been a heightened awareness of the risks associated with social media communication. Much attention has been given to discussions of fake news, conspiracy theories, and the dangerous algorithm-driven ‘rabbit holes’, with growing anxiety over their negative impact on public discourse and the shaping of societal attitudes (Ventsel & Madisson, 2019).
