Experimental Analysis of Quasi-Static Crack Propagation in Brittle Materials

The present research work concerns the experimental study of crack propagation in brittle materials under quasi-static tensile loading. These tests were carried out for two materials, quenched C90 steel and PMMA, in two different specimen configuration, to visualize the effect of the geometry and the nature of the material’s microstructure of the specimen on the crack trajectory. Images correlation technics with a high-speed camera was used to identify the crack initiation, propagation and crack arrest in some configurations. For the same specimen geometries, the nature of the material has an influence on the crack trajectories.
