Heavy metals (HMs) are present in water, sediments, air, soil, food, etc. Although the deleterious effects of HMs on ecosystems and human health are documented, detection and quantification of HMs have occurred as an important issue. Environmental monitoring of HMs is vital, and hence selection of an appropriate analytical method for their assessment in various ecosystems is paramount. Analytical methods used for assessment of HMs have evolved. Presently, many analytical techniques are available for HM detection having its certain merits and limitations. This chapter discusses the analytical methods for HM detection like electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques, as well as biomarkers.
