The Toxic Legacy: Unraveling the Human Health Burden of Metal Exposure

Heavy metal intoxication is linked to a range of health complications, with some metals serving no biological function yet causing significant harm to the human body and impairing its proper functioning. The rapid expansion of the metal industry, agricultural practices, and inadequate waste management contribute to environmental pollution, contaminating soils, water, and air. Heavy metals can adversely affect critical organs like the kidneys, brain, liver, and lungs. Extended or intense exposure can result in ongoing neurological, muscular, and degenerative disorders. Prolonged exposure to certain metals and their compounds has been related to a higher menace of cancer. Research has identified metals such as zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), and lead (Pb) as potential carcinogens. This study examines anthropogenic sources of chromium, cadmium, arsenic, and nickel, emphasizing their cancer risk and overall impact on health. The results suggest that a significant portion of health risks from metal exposure can be attributed to human activities.
