This chapter presents an introduction to various types of core optical networks, namely, long-haul networks, metropolitan area networks, and access networks. This chapter especially focuses on optical access networks and their types. Specifically, this chapter presents an in-depth analysis of the architecture of passive optical network (PON) and its variants including, Gigabit PON (G-PON), Ethernet PON (EPON), 10-Gigabit EPON (10G-EPON), 10-Gigabit symmetrical EPON (XGS-PON), next-generation PON2 (NG-PON2), and 50-Gigabit PON (50G-PON).
