The global telecommunications industry is being revolutionized, thanks to the enormous bandwidth offered by optical fibers. Concurrently, end-user bandwidth demand is rising. It is not practical to run fiber to every end customer. Integrated optical and wireless networks offer a potential solution to deal with this conundrum and provide end users with resilient access networks. This chapter focuses on the introduction to optical access and wireless networks. The evolution of various wireless standards is discussed in detail in this chapter. Further, an introduction to integrated optical and wireless networks is provided in this chapter along with its key benefits.
