Geomorphic Data and Geomorphometry Analyses

Geomorphology is a scientific discipline focused on Earth’s landscapes and landforms and the processes of their formation (Bloom 1969; Pitty 1971). Moreover, it is closely related to physical geography and geology. Traditionally, geomorphologists have studied landforms, but with advancements in remote sensing techniques, the range of potential study objects has spread to extraterrestrial objects and ocean bottoms (Wilson et al. 2007). Currently, data collection even includes ground images captures by rovers, such as the Curiosity rover (Diniega et al. 2021). The subject of geomorphological interest was expressed as “the events between the creation and the final destruction” of landforms (Huggett 2007). This concept is well illustrated in Fig. 6.1, which shows, in a metaphorical way, the destruction of a mountain range by external factors (Bloom 1969). These factors include weathering processes, erosion, and abrasion. In addition, some scientists view geomorphology as a discipline that explains “how landforms and landscapes respond to variable boundary conditions and disturbances” and “how geomorphic systems coevolve with climate, ecosystems, soils, and other environmental systems” (Phillips 2009). It represents a more systematic approach to physical geography that started in the 1960s (Chorley and Kennedy 1971).
