Remote consultation represents an advance in healthcare in terms of speediness and greater access in remote areas. However, its staging raises legal concerns such as licensing, liability, special informed consent, but above all, data privacy and confidentiality issues. At present, legislation worldwide is heterogeneous, ranging from countries with a developed legal framework to others where there is none. In any case, specific legislation is scarce, especially regarding data privacy. In order to enhance the implementation of telemedicine, an effective regulatory framework is required to protect patients and provide guidance to health professionals, without neglecting the application of the principles of medical ethics and the true essence of the doctor–patient relationship.
