Remote consultation in primary care, particularly during emergencies, represents an evolving field with significant potential, though limited in-depth scientific evidence currently exists. Nevertheless, existing research provides essential insights into the practical applications and future implications of remote consultation technologies in emergency response systems. This chapter investigates the role of remote consultation in reinforcing healthcare systems’ responsiveness and adaptability in crisis scenarios, assessing its advantages and limitations. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the utility of remote consultation, illustrating how such tools could act as effective triage mechanisms that optimize healthcare accessibility and patient flow. As a preliminary filter, remote consultation reduces inappropriate emergency department visits, alleviates pressure on overstretched healthcare facilities, and facilitates timely patient assessments. This triaging capability is crucial for enhancing clinical appropriateness and improving the allocation of healthcare resources, contributing directly to cost savings and increased operational efficiency. Remote consultation enables more strategic use of limited healthcare resources, ensuring that medical interventions are directed toward higher acuity cases. Remote consultation is advantageous in rural or remote areas and during infectious disease emergencies. In these contexts, it mitigates logistical and geographical barriers to healthcare. It supports infection control by limiting the need for physical presence, thereby reducing transmission risks for healthcare providers and patients. By enabling continuity of care under such challenging conditions, remote consultation strengthens healthcare accessibility for populations that would otherwise face substantial obstacles in receiving timely and appropriate medical attention. This chapter also emphasizes the critical role of interdisciplinary collaboration and the development of standardized diagnostic protocols in enhancing decision-making processes in complex clinical cases managed remotely. Standardized protocols and collaborative frameworks are essential for maintaining high-quality care standards, enabling healthcare professionals from diverse disciplines to efficiently coordinate and deliver patient-centred care within the constraints of remote interaction. Despite these numerous benefits, remote consultation is not without challenges. It encounters limitations primarily related to the lack of physical examination capabilities, which can compromise diagnostic accuracy. Additionally, substantial investments in technological infrastructure and workforce training are required to establish and sustain effective remote consultation systems. Equitable access remains another significant concern, as socioeconomic and digital divides may prevent specific populations from fully benefiting from these services. In summary, while remote consultation in primary care during emergencies has transformative potential, realizing this potential requires a comprehensive approach to addressing existing barriers. This analysis clarifies remote consultation’s unique contributions to emergency care, highlighting its capacity to improve healthcare quality, efficiency, and resilience.
