Energy, Economic, and Thermal Assessment of Insulating a Moroccan Building Envelope with a Biobased Material for Promoting Sustainability

Biobased materials and thermal insulation are essential levers for sustainable, energy-efficient construction. A material like hemp offers an innovative alternative to traditional materials, thanks to its renewability, low embodied energy, and potential to reduce carbon emissions. Its thermal performance translates into effective insulation, essential for stabilizing conditions inside buildingBuildings and reducing their energy consumption. This efficiency is particularly relevant in contexts such as that of a residential building in Al-Hoceima, MoroccoMorocco, where the use of hemp concrete for roof insulation has led to a 30% reduction in energy demand while improving thermal comfort by 8%. The study of this type of material, integrated with an energy and economic approach, highlights their potential to satisfy the challenges of the construction sector, which accounts for a significant proportion of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Although promising, biobased materials such as hemp concrete still face challenges in terms of standardization and widespread adoption. However, the numerical simulation performed with TRNSYS software clearly highlights the benefits of an integrated approach combining sustainabilitySustainability and thermal performance.
