Menopausal Hormone Therapy and Prevention of Chronic Disease
摘要
The inappropriate press release of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) trial findings in 2002 received sensational media coverage with misinterpretation and misrepresentation of research findings that caused unjustified panic and “myths” about breast cancer and cardiovascular disease risks. This produced a major decline in menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) usage and current hesitation in MHT use that persists today, despite evidence of benefits of MHT in slowing chronic diseases like osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, colon cancer as well as cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline in some women. Current recommendations also have limitations. This chapter explores the major clinical benefits and minor risks of MHT, highlighting the importance of a precision approach that considers the specific risks associated with different hormone combinations and administration routes.
