In this philosophical intervention, Constantine Sandis explores the resonances between Haruki Murakami’s 1999 novel Sputnik Sweetheart and Charles W. Morris’ 1964 book Signification and Significance. Sandis contends that the novel’s significance lies not in some correct interpretation or analysis of the signification of what we’ve been told but in figuring out what matters to us and why. This is because what things stand for and the significance that we assign to them are deeply intertwined. Murakami’s unique form of magical realism exploits this fact to reveal the symbols of love at play within the secret interconnectedness of human behaviour.
