This chapter explores the limitations of photography in effectively depicting the full scope of the environmental crisis. Traditional landscape aesthetics often obscure ecological damage, making pollution and degradation less visible. Scientific documentation, though precise, remains complex and inaccessible to the public. Networked images and citizen science provide a potential solution, allowing for alternative representations of environmental change. Through the case study of a single image depicting a polluted river, the chapter illustrates how digital photography can challenge dominant visual narratives and contribute to a more critical ecological awareness.
