Continual ecological crises and the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the challenge of grasping complex global issues. Documentary scholarship increasingly seeks approaches “beyond story” to represent crises that resist neat narratives. This chapter examines There’s Still Heaps of Water, an interactive expanded documentary responding to the 2019–20 Black Summer bushfires in so-called Australia. Through ecocritical anthropology and ecocinema theory, it explores how interactive filmmaking fosters attentiveness to environmental damage. The chapter argues that sensing, rather than storytelling, can offer a more nuanced response to ecological crises in documentary practice.
