The Toledo and Bronx zoos transferred 100 Kihansi Spray Toads to the University of Dar es Salaam captive breeding facility in August 2010. In early 2011, two disease transmission experiments were performed. In the first experiment, three development stages—larvae, metamorphs, and adults—of Phrynobatrachus acridoides, a native amphibian species that occurs in the Kihansi Gorge, were housed with the Kihansi Spray Toad. At the end of the experiment, all animals were swabbed for chytrid fungus and subjected to a post-mortem analysis which was negative. In the second set of experiments, Kihansi Spray Toads were housed at three densities in cages for 2 weeks that contained spray wetland vegetation and soil collected from potential reintroduction sites in the Kihansi Gorge. At the end of the experiment, animals were swabbed and tested from chytrid fungus which was negative. In June 2011, LKEMP formally ended. A Global Environment Facility supported project, the Kihansi Catchment Conservation and Management Project was designed during mid-2011 as a follow-on project.
