The health and existence of certain species may be jeopardized because of bioaccumulation, biomagnification, or even fatal impacts that can amplify the negative effects of pollution. Importantly, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are emerging pollutants that can interact with the endocrine system of wildlife, causing hormonal imbalances and reproductive issues. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN, 2022) lists 41% of amphibian species, 21% of reptiles, 13% of birds, and 27% of mammals as threatened with extinction, and environmental contaminants such as pharmaceuticals are just one of the many stressors that free-ranging species face. Emerging contaminants can change species interactions, community structure, and ecosystem function by interfering with ecological processes and interactions within ecosystems.
