This chapter addresses the interconnection between the time and place in which people live, critical events they experience, and their resiliency. It explores how disturbances in larger scale environmental factors affect resilience across multiple ecological levels, including ecosystems, the community, families, and individuals. Discussions of Jim Crow laws and the Great Migration in the United States, climate change and environmental refugees in Sudan, and the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in Armenia illustrate how disruptions in time and place influence resilient social functioning. Practice examples grounded in the resilience-enhancing stress model present measures for dealing with the repercussions of larger scale societal risks. Intervention strategies illustrate the role that social workers can play in ameliorating the distress experienced by people who have faced dislocation or displacement. A grand narrative interview reveals naturally occurring resilience strategies.
