Implementation of an MRI Quality Control Program in México

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a fundamental pillar in clinical diagnosis, in which the quality of the equipment and the images obtained are crucial to ensure accurate diagnoses. Despite its importance, regulations governing the essential parameters of MRI in Mexico are lacking. This regulatory gap leads to inconsistencies in image quality and equipment performance across healthcare institutions, potentially affecting the accuracy of diagnoses and patient outcomes. To address this gap, this project proposes adapting the American College of Radiologists (ACR) protocol to implement it in MRI equipment in the country. The ACR protocol is internationally recognized for its stringent quality control measures, which include evaluating parameters such as geometric accuracy, resolution, slice thickness, and image uniformity. This initiative establishes comprehensive quality control for MRI, which encompasses a variety of image quality and performance factors and aims to raise quality standards in Mexican MRI imaging. Additionally, this project seeks to create a set of national reference values that could be used by institutions across Mexico, ensuring a more homogeneous application of quality standards. By improving the consistency and reliability of MRI imaging, this approach will enhance diagnostic accuracy and drive progress in clinical practice and patient welfare, ultimately contributing to better healthcare outcomes.
