Design of a Protocol for the Configuration of Clinical Alarms of the Prioritized Biomedical Equipment of the Intensive Care Unit and the High Complexity Obstetric Unit at Fundación Valle del Lili

The Joint Commission International is a non-profit organization in charge of the international accreditation of health quality in hospital institutions. The organization proposes a series of standards that must be met by the health center whose purpose is to achieve accreditation, the standards focus on measuring, evaluating and improving the performance of the institution. Among these standards are those aimed at patient care (COP), which ensure the safety and quality of the patient from the moment he/she is admitted to the care center until he/she is discharged. Taking into account the importance of obtaining this accreditation by the Hospital Universitario Fundación Valle del Lili, work was carried out focused on compliance with the COP 3.1 standard, which refers to the adequate management of clinical alarms. According to reports from the Patient Health and Safety office, the services with the greatest need to establish adequate management of equipment alarms were the Intensive Care Units and the High Complexity Obstetric Unit. Within these services, 5 biomedical equipment were selected for intervention, including vital signs monitors, fetal monitors, infusion pumps, incubators and mechanical ventilators. Based on this, a protocol was developed with the clinical alarms of the 5 prioritized devices, detailing the priorities for each parameter, configuration range, pre-established range by manufacturer, a guide for the identification and establishment of visual and audible alarms, corrective actions for technical alarms, recommendations for their prevention, and a format to designate the personnel responsible for their management.
