In an era of ecological and social crises, the question of the influence of strategic sustainability communication has become increasingly significant. Current discourse in communication science explores how organizations must align their sustainability communication to achieve transformative effects—not only for organizations but also for society and therefore the common good. This chapter presents a typology that systematically records different patterns of strategic sustainability communication between the poles of “reporting” and “transformation.” The findings presented in this chapter are based on a literature review and two expert workshops. Adapted to the interactive process of the grounded theory method, the protocols of the workshops were clustered, abstracted, and consolidated into three types of strategic sustainability communication. (Transparency note: For this chapter, the AI tool DeepL was used to translate some passages and FlotAI was used for linguistic improvements in individual passages.)
