The word physis comes from Greek and is translated as “grow,” “spring forth,” or “the one who gives rise.” It is also called growth plate. Its primary function is the longitudinal growth of long bones, and therefore it can be considered an organ as such. The presence of this structure makes the real difference between the infantile skeleton and the adult skeleton, being his characteristic childhood injuries. Physeal injuries have two characteristics that we must keep in mind. The first is the severity of the consequences that can remain, even after correct treatment. The second characteristic is its high frequency in pediatric age. According to Rang, they account for a third of childhood skeletal injuries. The physis is the “place of least resistance” (locus minoris resistentiae) of the skeletal tissue, given that the resistance of ligaments around it is larger, which is why injuries occur in that area more easily, although it is possible to find injuries concomitants in both structures.
