The Evolution of Autonomy: From Reactive AI to Agentic AI
摘要
No one can deny that technological progress in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has entered a new era with the emergence of agentic AI with the next generation of intelligent agents. This marks an unprecedented turning point in the role and autonomy of intelligent entities. Whereas previous AI paradigms relied on predefined rules and human commands, agentic AI introduces systems capable of reasoning, learning, and making independent decisions without constant human intervention. By surpassing the concept of automation, agentic AI has unlocked potential in sectors such as agriculture, medicine, finance, and defense. However, its deployment also raises significant ethical, computational, and societal challenges. The limits of human–machine interaction are being redefined. This chapter reviews the definition of the terms “agentic” and “autonomy” and traces the evolution of autonomy through the different phases of the evolution of AI. This work aims providing a comprehensive understanding of agentic and its potential to make systems enable complex problem-solving in decentralized.
