Plastic pollution is at the forefront of contemporary environmental concerns, and a number of plastic waste management (PWM) approaches have emerged around the world in response, which increase the resilience of communities towards the presence of plastics in their natural and built environment. Socially innovative programs that target plastic at the source through improved segregation at the collection stage have been found to be effective in the regions analyzed in the chapter. After collecting plastic waste, it can be processed in a number of ways, depending on the type of waste. These include using used plastic waste to make roads, coprocessing plastic waste to help other industrial processes, and using techniques like pyrolysis to make fuel. Improved valuation of plastic waste through buyback and more circular recycling schemes has shown that leakage of plastics into the environment can be substantially reduced in the Indian and global context. Additionally, case studies outline how community-led programs can involve corporations and administrative entities in extended producer responsibility (EPR) frameworks to a greater extent and across localized contexts through urban local bodies (ULB), as well as state, regional, and national levels.
