It involves understanding that various system components are interconnected and that changes in one area can ripple through others, often in unpredictable ways. By adopting a systems thinking mindset, one can better anticipate the potential consequences of actions, identify leverage points for change, and develop solutions that consider the broader context rather than just isolated parts. Systems thinking causes a shift away from a linear, cause-and-effect perspective to a more dynamic, feedback understanding of how things work. Students have been taught to follow traditional thought processes to analyze and solve problems, where a problem is broken up into manageable chunks and each piece is analyzed and solved in isolation before putting the piecewise solutions back together. This linear compartmentalized problem-solving method works for more straightforward and more routine problems. As society and technology have progressed, so has the complexity of our problems and the systems that operate in them. To meet our expanding needs, which include leveraging new technologies, the traditional approach to problem-solving appears to be creating more problems faster than we can solve them. So, we need improved ways of thinking and rigorous methods to improve our odds of success.
