As pedagogical discussions in the early years field have progressed in the Global North, a focus on the education and learning of children aged over three has predominated, while the voice of babies, toddlers and 2-year-olds, and the adults who care for them has been mostly unheard. However, the pedagogical wisdom of Emmi Pikler and Elinor Goldschmied has always shone a light on the wellbeing of 0- to 3-year-olds. Their deep understanding of infants and toddlers has provided us with underpinning pedagogical principles that guide a holistic and respectful approach to the care and education of our youngest children, and that thereby support their wellbeing, and also that of birth to three educators. This chapter then will introduce the key ideas and principles that are at the core of the Pikler approach and the Froebelian ideas of Elinor Goldschmied. It will set out the concepts and practices they hold in common and that nurture wellbeing through trusting relationships, respectful care and autonomous play, and will consider how these may offer a challenge to the current goal-oriented, adult-dominated orthodoxy in UK frameworks and pedagogy, and thereby offer birth to three educators approaches that can support positive professional esteem.
