It is suggested that the American jail of the twenty-first century has maintained its general role in society since 1850, when “any random jail prisoner was less likely a debtor, a delinquent, or a lunatic, and more likely a petty offender or even potentially a convicted felon” [2]. Prior to this era in American jails, it was more common to find the wayward youth or mentally deficient incarcerated as capital or corporal punishment was the preferred methods of dealing with criminal activity in in the United States during the early nineteenth century [2].
