Chromophore-Appended Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complexes as Chemical Sensor for Organic Molecules

Chemical sensors have garnered significant interest for their role in detecting and overseeing potential environmental threats. Chromophore moieties are the groups that absorb certain wavelengths of visible light and reflect or transmit others, resulting in the perceived colour. Chromophores are often found in organic compounds, such as pigments and dyes, and they contain a conjugated system of alternating single and multiple bonds, which allow the absorption of light. Host guest complexation with chromophore moieties is an important principle for developing chemical sensors. Due to the versatile characteristics of native cyclodextrins (CDs), they can effectively sense various organic molecules by forming inclusion complexes. The CD host molecule detects small organic guest molecules directly by entrapping them within its cavity through host–guest complexation. In contrast, larger molecules are detected on the outer surface of the cavity. This chapter discusses cyclodextrin-based inclusion complexes containing various chromophoric groups, such as naphthalene, ferrocene, anthracene, pyrene, and dye molecules, which function as sensors for recognizing organic molecules such as steroids, pesticides, and nitro aromatics, which will be very helpful for new generation researchers.
