This chapter explores the evolution of intelligence from its biological roots to its digital manifestations in artificial intelligence. This chapter begins with the etymology and modern definition of intelligence, highlighting its role in perception, reasoning, and knowledge formation. It then traces humanity’s unique linguistic abilities as a vehicle for shared knowledge, from prehistoric cave art to the emergence of speech. The focus shifts to natural language processing (NLP), explaining its two key branches, understanding and generation, and how language models (LMs) evolved into powerful large language models (LLMs). This chapter examines the future of AI, its slow march toward sentience, and the profound societal, legal, and ethical challenges it poses, from hallucinations and bias to deepfakes and data security risks and concludes with a call for robust AI governance. It introduces the broader goal of this book: to equip enterprise leaders with actionable frameworks for ethical, lawful, and practical AI adoption in the current “pre-regulatory era.”
