Antibiotics in the Coastal Waters and Sediments of China: A Brief Review and Perspective

Substantial amounts of antibiotics have been consumed in recent years. Coastal ecosystem is highly sensitive to human activities, therefore, antibiotics in coastal waters and sediments should be given higher concern. This study reviewed the presence of antibiotics within the marine environment along the coastlines of China’s Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea regions. According to related research, the results suggest that in coastal waters, the concentration of antibiotics was observed to be maximum in the Yellow Sea, subsequently higher in the East China Sea, then in the South China Sea, and the least in the Bohai Sea. SAs, QNs and MLs are commonly detected in coastal waters. The pollution in the Bohai Sea and the East China Sea may be related to intensive husbandry and aquaculture, with main contaminants were TCs, SAs and QNs. The main contaminants in the South China Sea and the Yellow Sea were SAs, QNs, and MLs, indicating that humans, animal husbandry, and aquaculture all contribute to environmental risks. The concentrations of antibiotics found in the coastal sediments within the East China Sea exhibited a notably higher level compared to those in other areas. To control and prevent antibiotics pollution, management of administration, safe alternatives and comprehensive monitoring should be enhanced and restricted further.
