Antiplatelet agents are a widely prescribed drug class used in the prevention of arterial thrombotic events which act through the inhibition of platelet function. They are used either as single drugs or in combination, and in front of their beneficial effects against cardiovascular events and mortality they increase the risk of bleeding, especially from the gastrointestinal tract or after surgery or trauma. Antiplatelet agent-associated hemorrhagic events may hesitate in severe sequelae and require prompt intervention. Moreover, surgery and other invasive procedures carried out during antiplatelet intake may generate serious bleeding. Here we review the main established or novel methods for the management of bleeding and of surgery in patients on antiplatelet medications.
