This chapter looks at how Shushi has become a centre of urban violence. Starting from the 1905 tensions, we look at the 1918 Ottoman invasion, and, then, at the 1920 massacres bringing destruction to the Shushi Armenian districts, which have never been restored. In 1977, Shushi was declared a protected site by Azerbaijani SSR but only a Christian building was included in the list of monuments to be preserved. With the start of the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, the city became the most important Azerbaijani stronghold in Nagorno-Karabakh. This lasted until 9 May 1992, when Shushi was captured by Armenian forces. This changed again after the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War.
