The aim of the chapter is to illustrate the role of the United Nations (UN) Security Council in this thematic area by introducing some of the emerging risks related to the impacts of slow-onset events on peace and security. In doing so, this overview will look at: first, the historical evolution of including sea level rise in the UN Security Council’s agenda; second, what sea level rise will mean for human and international security; and third, the contemporary challenges and the limits envisaged to identify which role could be played by the UN Security Council in this regard. The chapter will provide insights from the open debate held by the UN Security Council in February 2023 to address the sea level rise security challenges.
