This chapter is an overview of the Tunisian food security and the national Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies adopted to face invasive alien species (IAS) pathways of entry, to control pests and to enhance export and domestic demand. In Tunisia, the agricultural sector involves 12.6% of gross domestic product (GDP) and employs almost one quarter of the country’s labor force. However, this sector is threatened by various IAS introduced in the twentieth century (such as Phyllocnistis citrella in 1994, Tuta absoluta in 2008, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus in 2011, Erwinia amylovora in 2012, Phyllosticita citricarpa in 2019, and Citrus tristeza virus and Dactylopius opuntiae in 2021). These IAS are subject to a national control strategy to eradicate the disease from contaminated areas, and prevent its introduction into free areas. This program also contributes preventing the introduction of other pests (such as Xylella fastidiosa, Spodoptera frugiperda, and Palmaspis phoenicis) recently detected in neighboring Mediterranean countries and can dramatically induce a disaster to domestic arable lands. In addition to pest control, training and communication programs are conducted to develop National Phytosanitary Capacity, share information, and take measures against IAS. Tunisia has also implemented certification programs to preserve agricultural sectors and to replant damaged areas with healthy and resistant varieties.
