This chapter is a summary of a review made on mechanized tunneling methods starting with the Industrial Revolution based on the use of coal for power steam engines, leading to the development of roadheaders and modern tunneling machines. The role of rock-cutting experiments in developing these fantastic machines is also summarized with a brief explanation of Gripper Type TBMs, Single Shield, Double Shield, EPB, Slurry, Crossover, and variable density TBMs. Performance prediction models of roadheaders, hard rock, and soft ground TBMs are also the main topics in this comprehensive summary. The basic principles of tunnel ventilation, muck transport, rail systems, and belt conveyors are discussed. Another critical topic in this chapter is the vibration created by TBMs. The possibility of using the vibration measurements to identify the ground ahead of the tunnel and the criteria for the damage of vibration to the surrounding area and historical heritages, with the experience of one of the authors for adequate water in Istanbul, is discussed briefly.
