A Review of the Conventional Tunneling Methods

This chapter first summarizes the equipment used in conventional tunneling and its role in high-speed drives and safe operations. The next topic is the drillability of the rock and its role in conventional tunneling. Within this topic, the drilling index developed in NTNU, the rock drillability index developed by Hoseinie et al., destruction work developed by Thuro, field drillability tests carried out by Bilgin, full-scale laboratory drilling tests and drilling specific energy, a comparative study between cutting and specific energy is discussed. Some examples of conventional tunneling methods and past experiences are also given. The chapter continues with a summary of blasting technology for tunneling, explosives, detonators, drilling patterns, blasting sequences, and types of cuts. In the section on vibration due to drill and blast and its effects on buildings and monuments, one of the authors summarizes his experience in the T1 Tunnel to protect the water source supplying Bejaie in Algeria, detailing the blasting operations and measurement of vibrations carried out in this area of the world.
