Embracing Change
摘要
The embracing change component of SHINE contains strategies to help individuals navigate prolonged adversity, such as severe disabilities and poverty. It emphasises that although adversity may appear endless, resilience can be cultivated through optimism, explanatory styles, avoiding rumination, and recognising constructive positive changes such as posttraumatic growth (PTG). When facing prolonged adversity, people should seek valid and optimistic explanations for the causes of negative events, avoid brooding and pessimistic rumination, and differentiate between constructive and illusory PTG. Practical exercises are provided to foster a self-serving explanatory style and promote psychological resilience, urging individuals to be open to genuine positive changes that may arise from adversity. Through a comprehensive analysis of the interplay between psychological responses and adversity, the chapter underscores the potential for personal growth despite challenges.
