In the first section of this chapter (1.1) we sketch the history of techniques for computing the sine of 1° in Hellenistic trigonometry and its Arabic, Persian and European successors, along with the mathematical foundations of iterative techniques for this calculation. Section 1.2 situates this problem in the context of Indian trigonometry, and section 1.3 discusses in more detail the Sanskrit text and manuscript that form the main subject of this study.
