This chapter begins with an historical account of various periods when scientists have rallied to denounce the participation of other scientists in unethical practices. These periods have generally coincided with the aftermath of war, and sought to create awareness of projects specific to military use. In 1990, a scientist advocated against her own science. Publicly resigning from research in the top journal in her field, Martha Crouch criticized science for its disinterest in its social and environmental responsibilities. The analysis of responses to her resignation and call for ethical consciousness demonstrates how ideologies around science and society developed in the early part of the twentieth century persist today.
