This chapter examines scientific journal articles in which the authors seek to persuade their peers within climate and ecological scientific communities to take up radical acts of resistance. The chapter describes how such articles arise at a time where scientists face renewed opportunities of confronting political power on climate and environmental issues. Looking at the central rhetorical figures in two case texts, the chapter argues that one article succeeds in using antithesis for tapping into the ongoing co-production of science and society, whereas another fails to do so with its frustrated use of the ploche.

摘要

This chapter examines scientific journal articles in which the authors seek to persuade their peers within climate and ecological scientific communities to take up radical acts of resistance. The chapter describes how such articles arise at a time where scientists face renewed opportunities of confronting political power on climate and environmental issues. Looking at the central rhetorical figures in two case texts, the chapter argues that one article succeeds in using antithesis for tapping into the ongoing co-production of science and society, whereas another fails to do so with its frustrated use of the ploche.
