Memorializing Loss: Materializing Memory Through Everyday Objects

Primary Courses: Interpersonal/Relational Communication Secondary Courses: Communication and Culture, Death and Dying (Grief/Loss), Family Communication, Gender Studies, Intercultural Communication, Small group communication Visual Communication Time: One to two 75-minute class periods are required for the activity. Day one includes a discussion of grief and loss and/or memorials and memorialization. The focus here depends on the focus of the course (e.g., memorials and visual art; grief and loss in relationships, etc.). Day two involves engagement in the activity and discussion. The activity will take a full 75 minutes and can easily be extended to fill a 2- to 3-hour class period: Learning outcomes: Key Terms: Memorialization, Memory, Dialogue, Relational Communication.
